Kullen Logsdon - The Morning Sun MTW Industries in Mt. Pleasant has been recognized as one of the top 50 companies in Michigan to watch in 2017, an awards program presented by Michigan Celebrates Small Business.

For the second consecutive year, a mid-Michigan company has been honored as one of the top small businesses in Michigan.

MTW Industries in Mt. Pleasant was recently recognized as one of the 2017 “Michigan 50 Companies to Watch”, an awards program presented by Michigan Celebrates Small Business.

Companies make it onto the watch list by having between six to 99 full-time employees and generating $750,000 to $50 million in annual revenue or working capital from investors or grants, according to a press release.

Winners were selected by Michigan-based judges from the banking, economic development, entrepreneurship development and venture capital communities.

MTW Industries, located at 706 West Pickard St., and other businesses were recognized as companies to watch will be honored at an awards ceremony during the 13th annual MCSB Gala on May 4 in Lansing.

“There’s over 5,000 small businesses in the state, so it’s quite an honor,” said owner/member Brent Fisher. “You’re scrutinized by your peers, so it’s quite a big deal.”

The award comes one year after the Mt. Pleasant company won a “Best Small Business Award,” which is awarded to companies which have had success in creating jobs, increasing sales, improving their business strategy and their involvement with the Michigan Small Business Development Center.

MTW Industries — founded in 2005 — is a full-service fabrication, metal sales and manufacturing facility that works with aluminum, stainless steel and carbon steel.

Fisher and his partner, Dean Gluch, started with a small farm shop in Shepherd before moving the company in 2009 to its 7,000-square foot facility in Mt. Pleasant.

Fisher pointed to the company’s customer service as the main factor in its exceptional growth and said MTW Industries is looking to move to a 24,000-square foot facility in mid-Michigan within the next year.

Fisher said the large expansion of the business has worried him at times, but he and his partner are excited for the future.

“It’s shocking at times; it’s overwhelming at times,” he said. “It’s also very exciting. You never know where your dreams are going to take you. Over the next year we’re going to see a lot more substantial growth with all the different projects we have in the works.”
